FAQs
Q: What is osteopathy?
A: Osteopathic medicine has a strong emphasis on the inter-relationship of the body's nerves, muscles, bones and organs. Doctors of osteopathic medicine, or DOs, apply the philosophy of treating the whole person to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, disease and injury. Osteopathic physicians have a strong focus on preventive health care.
Q: What is preventative health care?
A: In addition to treating you when you are sick, your medical provider can follow a program designed to help you stay healthy. A preventive service might be a test or it might be advice from your doctor on how to integrate healthy habits into your daily life. Preventing disease helps save on healthcare costs and contributes to better quality of life.
Q: What is osteopathic manipulative medicine?
A: Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is part of the training and practice of DOs. With OMT, osteopathic physicians use their hands to diagnose illness and injury and to encourage your body's natural tendency toward good health. Your DO will move your muscles and joints using techniques including stretching, gentle pressure and resistance. OMT can help people of all ages and backgrounds by easing pain, promoting healing, and increasing mobility. This treatment is combined other available medical options.
